1901 – Federation

Prior to Federation (in 1901)

For many years prior to Federation (in 1901), the importance of unifying the separate self-governing Crown colonies in Australia had been vigorously debated.

However, with the persuasive endeavours of great promotors of unity such as Sir Henry Parkes, the majority view firmed in favour of voting for the creation of one nation under one flag.

1900: Unofficial flag competition

The Melbourne Herald newspaper promoted an unofficial federal flag competition but the choice of design proved lacklustre.

1901 – 1 Jan: Federation

Federation of states – formation of the Commonwealth of Australia

1901 – 9 May: First sitting of Australia’s parliament

The first sitting of Australia’s parliament was at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne, the first Parliament House.
